When Evil Abounds
“According to their deeds, He will repay fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies. So shall they fear the Name of the Lord from the West and His glory from the rising of the sun; for He will come like a rushing stream driven by the Spirit of Adonai.” Is 59:18-19
As the storm-clouds began to overshadow the crème de la crème of God’s chosen in Germany in the late 30s, the responses unveiled hidden priorities that ranged from the superficial to latent depths … operating both among those in need of rescue, as well as those capable of rescue. Yet, from what was unveiled from the depths and the hidden came unusual alliances comprised of unlikely bands of unsung heroes, following patterns of similarly some most unlikely alliances found in Scripture.
For those at the pinnacle of their professions, enjoying the fruits of assimilation, the response was: “Give it time, this will pass.” At the other end of the spectrum were unsung heroes like the members of the Mossad Aliyah Bet, formed in 1938. These were realists who mustered the people and resources needed to displace those in the cross-hairs of evil to Israel and other safe-havens.
If the manifestation of evil encroaches and amasses with subtlety, then worldly success is the partner in the dance, seducing and blinding those whose priorities have faltered.
Indeed, there was nothing new under-the-sun in either these historic recurrences or in those failing to raise a voice against them. Yet, following the tragic brutalities of the Nazi’s during the course of WWII, it was this same remnant of activists like the Mossad Aliyah Bet who were mobilizing efforts to extract former concentration camp refugees out of the dark holes of British refugee camps, in challenge to the absurd quotas set for Jews wanting to immigrate to Israel.
In the crosshairs of evil’s plans, then and now, are God’s people and the long-standing pivotal target of what Scripture considers as the center of the earth.
“Gog, you will turn your hand against the waste places now inhabited and the people who are gathered from the nations, who dwell at the center of the earth.” Ez 38:10-12 NASB
Today’s toxic buildup of evil, with the amassing lies and deception is complemented and enhanced by those holding the moniker of God’s people in being indifferent and apathetic as these historic patterns reemerge. To maintain the needed protection for the alignment needed in that particular season, the resurrected Jesus gave unique heed to John on the Isle of Patmos for the need of individual communities of God’s people to not only wake-up to the realities, but to spiritually prepare themselves strategically and selflessly for the actions needed.
The Chink in the Armor
From the time God has had a people, the chink in the armor of those called by His Name has been in wanting to be like “everyone else.” Yet, again and again, the expectation of God’s protection and blessing has coincided with those, albeit often remnants, who took a stand, in terms of standing in both their identity and the needed actions against impending assaults.
The chink in the armor has also been in shunning action … perhaps ranging from the hope for acceptance to avoiding confrontation to misconstrued Bambi-believer blended identities rather than operating with the heart of the Lion of Judah. In only one major military battle in Scripture (2 Chron 20:17) did God give the instruction that His people would not need to fight, but even then, they were to go out and to face their enemy.
Alternatively, there arose a range of unsung heroes … spies, ship captains, military-types, undercover operations, entrepreneurs, money brokers to the range of those sacrificially supporting the Mossad Aliyah Bet, each serving vital roles in facilitating those Jews who heeded the call to go to Israel in the mid-30s to 1940 (also labeled the Fifth Aliyah). There then was a similar mix in what has been termed the illegal immigration (Aliyah Bet) during WWII and the time following because of the restrictive immigration quotas into Israel.
The Amassing of Righteous Responses to Evil
Eventually in 1948, an amazing range of uniquely different factions of Jews in Israel came together with the resiliency and backbone for the rebirth of Israel as a nation and then against all odds, in the fight to defend their statehood in the War of Independence. Simultaneously in the same time-frame of Israel’s rebirth, emerged a dramatic move of the Spirit in the US, with the birth of hundreds of healing ministries, restoring the supernatural power of God to the Church. This parallel of these key developments in Israel and moves of the Spirit in the Church evolved with further dramatic developments in 1967 when Jerusalem was restored to Jewish control with the Charismatic revival and the growth of Messianic Judaism … foreshadowing the amassing of righteous developments in Israel with moves of the Spirit globally in the Church expected to mark the season now upon us.
The response to evil begins with a grasp of the process of restoration underway that God is doing through His people, both Israel and the Church. Any realistic response to evil must recognize and embrace the depth of this God-perspective, purpose and identity of His people.
“Also, see to it that there is no immoral or godless person – like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal. For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He found no chance for repentance, though he begged for it with tears.” (TLV) Hebrews 12:16-17
The Biblical Pattern of Unlikely Alliances
So it was, during another time in history … aligning with the standard that describes Esau’s self-absorbed mindset as godless … when God’s judgment was separating the righteous from the wicked within the household of faith, that it was to a most unexpected unsung heroine, the Gentile widow at Zarephath, that God sent the prophet Elijah into an alliance for what would become supernatural provision for both Elijah and the widow’s family.
Not unlike the Mossad Aliyah Bet, what is significant was the poise and priority of the widow’s soul, which prompted her in faith, to give heed the word of Elijah during such a critical time.
“So she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty.” 1 Kings 17:15-16
There is a most interesting caveat tied to God’s instruction to Elijah to go to this specific widow after the brook had dried up.
“Arise, go to Zarephath and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” I Kings 17:9
Elijah’s instructions from God were very clear. Yet, when Elijah asked her for something to eat, she did not respond with any sense that God had commanded her, no less spoken to her. Rather she indicated that the meager provision of flour she had was for a last meal for her and her son. So, I looked up the Hebrew word which is translated as “commanded” in most translations and “ordered” in others. A more correct translation would be that “I have set in motion and aligned the circumstances by which the widow will provide for you.”
Knowing the poise of her soul, God clearly chose this widow to provide for Elijah. Once Elijah gave her the word of the Lord, she did not hesitate. Scripture explains that she did exactly as Elijah had asked with the combination of Elijah’s word together with her faith and obedience combining to become the substance of the miracle of benefit to each.
Strategic Alliances that Undermine Evil Designs
So it has been with ones outside the household of faith, who God has chosen, over the years to work together with those God has invested His authority into … for strategic alliances in the accomplishment of His assignments. There are many throughout Scripture that God has “commanded” or rather has “aligned and set in motion the circumstances by which in difficult and dark seasons that unlikely allies would come alongside and provide the means of rescue for God’s chosen.”
This was the basis of the alliance between Joseph and Pharaoh. Pharaoh recognized the prophetic authority of God that operated within Joseph and made him administrator over the resources of Egypt … ultimately serving as a rescue for Joseph’s family. It was the same thing with Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar. God’s prophetic word is accompanied by an authority that is and will be recognized by those not in rebellion against God.
God “commanding” them as He did the widow at Zarephath explains the almost prophetic insight into the pre-WWII activities of the secular Mossad Aliyah Bet. Likewise, it later taps the mystery of how groups of seriously diverse, some being secular factions of Jews could come together cohesively to organize, strategize, fight for and then succeed in obtaining statehood for Israel in 1948.
It suggests a higher standard of righteousness than that represented by the illusive purity of doctrinal precepts …. giving hope for Paul’s observation in his letter to the Ephesians concerning the Church and the unity needed to align things for the Lord’s return.
It was the basis for the righteous remnant of midwives in Egypt who defied Pharaoh’s edict against the Jewish children being born. It was the hidden advantage with the prostitute Rahab when Israel came against Jericho. When evil abounds the Lord will raise up a standard against it, with the response often manifesting from the most unlikely. The dynamic is captured by the angelic exchange Zechariah had describing what the Lord had set in motion to rescue Jerusalem, Israel and Judea from the oppressive evil intent of those seeking to scatter them.
“And I said, ‘What are these coming to do?’ He said, ‘These are the horns that scattered Judah, so that no one raised his head. And these have come to terrify them, to cast down the horns of the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.’” Zech 1:20-21
Multiple Dimensions of the Birthing
Scripture notes there will be a time when the nations bow down before Him. This season like never before, portends battle lines and multiple dimensions converging in the world’s cosmic struggle against evil. What is unique and emerging is being defined by sovereign manifestations of the Spirit.
As such, not unlike the time preceding and then into WWII, we’ve entered a season of unusual alignments demarking the lines between good and evil. Zechariah’s centuries-old glimpse into this dynamic reveals the heart of this struggle … with the horns sent to terrify and cast down those whose intent has been to divide and scatter Judah … that are coming from the presence of the Lord. The multiplicity of these interacting alignments and alliances are no less than that which God used in the dreams of Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar or in the instruction He gave to Elijah concerning the alliance and provision he could expect from the Gentile widow of Zarephath.
At the forefront of the birthing of these multiple dimensions is an emerging passion from His presence … surpassing intellectual propositions, although it holds the potential of myopically being seduced and reduced by the intellectual. It is a passion from His presence, at this stage hard to explain, yet conforming with what touched Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar to create the unusual, yet durable, meaningful alliances that resulted with Joseph and Daniel that will overshadow and challenge short-sighted doctrinal perspectives and worldviews.
Among the short-sighted responses is the fulfillment of Jesus’ command to “Go into all the world.” (Mark 16:15) For most, this admonition has become a serious chink in the armor and even a deceptive illusion that has morphed into abiding with and cloistered solely with those of like-minded doctrinal persuasions.
The early church met from house to house and even the big-name leaders didn’t focus their efforts inside the Temple but met openly on Solomon’s porch. The early church was not an institution but rather a movement of power that operated “in the midst of the world.” The resurgence of power to the Church that paralleled the rebirth of Israel in 1948 was mobile with its impetus largely in tents … drawn by a consciousness of His presence recognized by all.
The Passion of His Presence and Restoration
In many ways, this passion from His presence taps my first visit to Israel, when on the drive up to Jerusalem I had this overwhelming sense of being connected, of belonging to this place. During the Charismatic renewal, the sovereign passion being imparted was a God-consciousness of which even non-religious people were aware.
For the emerging season, this consciousness of His presence will trigger the horns of Zechariah’s prophesy sent to terrify and cast down those with the intent being to scatter Judah. It may include but will transcend that represented by Zionism or religious conservatism. It incorporates what has begun with God’s move in the marketplace. It increasingly taps and represents a sharpened grasp of matters close to God’s heart and the Kingdom … and the strategic opportunities and unlikely alliances in the shadows already beginning to emerge and take shape. It likewise bears on a shift that will overshadow the ambition of those driven as over-achievers and performers into what is viewed as the sacrificial servant leadership espoused by Jesus.
This passion from His presence will serve as just that: a sovereign alignment paralleling the early days of the Charismatic renewal when believers from a range of doctrinal persuasions were, in purity of heart, moved with spontaneity to gather to seek God and to pray.
What they shared was their bedrock belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the miracle-working power of the Holy Spirit. Globally, there is already emerging a groundswell of those meeting to pray daily, by video calls, from home to home and via unique combinations of such venues.
This spontaneity of gathering will be defined by those who fear and serve the Lord and is not to be confused with things religious or churchy, although it may dovetail and find cooperative alliances through venues of church, conservative value movements and Zionist agendas. Indeed it will increasingly be driven by the passion prompted by His presence.
It comes with the caveat of Jesus’ warning to be wary of the leaven of the Pharisees (things religious) and of Herod (things political). The warning targeted not the flour (or truths they misconstrued), but rather the leaven which carries a distorted life of its own when it is disproportionately added to the flour. In other words, similar to the Mossad Aliyah Bet prior to WWII, these will be alliances serving to significantly complement the whole rather than competing or attempting to displace with one another as standalone movements.
With this passion from His presence for His priorities and unlikely alliances will come anticipatory responses with unusual gifted capabilities. Getting the anticipatory responses right will require the recognition of the multiple dimensions to what the Lord is releasing …. not just in the West, but globally as it impacts the alignment with and restoration of Israel.
When Evil Abounds
The response of the righteous to the multiplicity of these God-initiated birthings will converge and trigger anticipatory and unusual manifestations impeding the encroachments of evil. At the forefront is and will be God’s judgment of the wicked. These judgments will carry a correlary need for the righteous, like the preparation the Israelites made at the original night of Passover, lest their fate be impacted by the sweep of God’s judgment.
This preparation punctuates and parallels the words of correction spoken in Revelation to the churches when the response to “these are those who are turning the world upside down” had amassed with coordinated lies, deception and propaganda resulting in coliseum events of being fed to the lions; persecution not matched on such a scale until the days of Hitler.
Sovereign judgment of the wicked will parallel exposure of religious idols that sow division, while simultaneously bringing unity to God’s priorities that conform to the unusual manifestations in the Church and Israel … when in 1948 Israel achieved its statehood and in 1967 when Jerusalem was restored to Jewish control.
We have entered a time with a serious need to prayerfully recognize these multiple dimensions within the context of the big-picture lest myopic focus serves to sidetrack or become inbred. Again, these multiple dimensions are in the birthing process, with the expectation of the birthing preceding that of the unusual alignments that will follow.
The season upon us is proving to be one of extreme pressures and intensities. The prophesy of Zechariah of the four wicked horns sent to scatter Judah, will increasingly be anticipated and met by those horns from God’s presence sent to terrify them. While evil’s concerted intent is to divide, God’s power is amassing and focused on uniting and empowering.
As the pressures increase, there is a need in humility to consciously hold steady and support one another in doing so; a time to give priority to abiding in Him and to giving focus to the higher dimensions of what the Spirit is saying. The wisdom needed to avoiding the seductions and the propensity of being overwhelmed will be found not only in the preparation needed to discern and recognize these unlikely alliances, but in unwrapping the strategies hidden in the words of Daniel and the words of Jesus to the segments of the Church captured by John the Revelator.
“Then once again you will see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between the person who serves God and one that doesn’t serve him. For the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the proud and evildoers will be stubble; the day that is coming will set them ablaze,” says Adonai, “and leave them neither root nor branch. But to you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will break out leaping, like calves released from the stall.” Mal 3:18-20 CJB
