The Daniel Calling


In the mid-90s, during prayer, I began receiving an understanding about a call of God defining unique spiritual leaders in the marketplace. With no promotions… and nothing more than my connections, a simple web-site and a small email list, I begin sending out pithy articles describing what I was gleaning in prayer. My target audience was prophetic intercessors and leaders seeking to better understand the changes in the times together with the role of leaders within the household of faith, based on the priorities of God’s heart.

As I prayed into the dynamics of this call of God and the shift in the times it coincided with, there came an unfolding of the high-stakes and significance of this calling. After a time the Lord led me to compile a selection of these articles into a book capturing the top-line thrust of what I had been perceiving.

While the focus of this book’s message was drawn primarily from the life of Joseph, I clearly sensed the Lord giving me the title for this, the first in a series of books on this calling as “The Joseph-Daniel Calling.” Coinciding with this calling has been a phenomenon involving a shift of power that has now become popularly known as the wealth transfer.

Now, with almost 25 years of describing this calling and shift to the times, I have begun receiving another side of the picture. While this additional revelation gives greater insight into the emerging times, it complements the distinctiveness of this calling with the mantle of Daniel.

Whereas there are significant commonalities between the Joseph and Daniel callings, the differences underscore the range of cultural distinctives operating as the clash of all ages comes into alignment.

Commonalities for Joseph and Daniel
Joseph and Daniel were righteous men of God during times when their brethren’s indiscretions triggered judgment all around them. The commonalities begin with God’s orchestration of safe places, preserving and restoring his people to their covenant roots, in the midst of times of chaos and change.

The mantle of both was extremely holy. The worlds they lived in embraced the reality of the spiritual world and the supernatural. Both Joseph and Daniel exercised unusual authority in the application of their gift and anointing. They had profound influence on the steps and the course of the cultures of which they became central figures. Joseph and Daniel each experienced unusual favor from those whose authority they were under – favor tied to the recognition of their mantles being from God, despite these rulers having very different spiritual orientations.

Each served God’s purposes, changing the spiritual climate of their host culture and ultimately directing their resources toward the restoration of God’s purposes for His chosen people. Both were of regal Hebrew lineage with unequivocal dedication to their holy calling and their instantaneous obedience to His guidance. They operated with undivided hearts that upheld God’s standard in the midst of their pagan host cultures.

Their oneness with the Lord was exhibited in fearlessly administering God’s decrees toward the fulfillment of His purposes. They lived by the covenant(s) of their forefathers and were disciplined in the focus of their intent, undistracted by either their own people or the rulers they served. This is noted by Joseph’s brothers being settled in Goshen, apart from the activities he was administering. Then for Daniel it was illustrated by the dramatic judgment on both Nebuchadnezzar and his son Belshazzar when they got too full of themselves and strayed from acknowledging the sovereignty of God in the kingdom of men, as the One granting the power to rule to whomever He chooses.

Joseph was very different from his brothers. While he was a child of his father’s old age, he tended to set the standard and pace – which rankled his older brothers. This led to him being conspired against by them because of it. Daniel and his companions stood out from among the others taken into captivity and this difference is what landed them in the training to serve in the king’s court in Babylon.

Even within the court they stood out from the high-level occult practitioners surrounding them, upholding and setting the standard for their faith in the face of brutal challenges. Yet, it was not a blind following of tradition, but rather the Spirit of God living within them, that resulted in a wisdom and anointing that distinguished them from the other “wise men” of the court. They stood aligned with God’s heart, ways and priorities. Daniel clearly discerned what it meant to major in the essentials and let the minor things pass. He allowed his name-change to pass, but upheld practices that represented his protection. He never wavered from speaking the full counsel he received from God. His unrelenting courage demonstrated his fear of God. There was nothing mealy-mouthed about Daniel.

There is a Western expression with a range of applications. For the most part, it describes ones who think differently: who “march to the beat of a different drummer.” Sometimes it describes ones who fail to get with the program, but in the cases of Joseph and Daniel it marks their independent and courageous thinking. The fear of God shaped their reality. Whereas one of the long-term generational weaknesses of their people was “wanting to be like everyone else,” these were not people-pleasers but God-pleasers. They didn’t conform to popular opinion, but had a higher standard by which they lived, thought and operated.

The Times and Purpose of Their Calling
The significance of the model of these two men of old for today is first toward the goal of the restoration of Israel, both the people and the Land — and supporting this goal, the strategy described as the wealth transfer. It offers wisdom for ones serving as God’s ambassadors in what can be challenging, if not hostile seats of power.

It should again be noted that the times for both Joseph and Daniel represented a significant shift within the context of the cultures that surrounded God’s people, thrusting these chosen ones into the highest positions of influence in what might be considered as safe places, in what was otherwise the turbulent, chaotic but strong cultures around them.

This shift suggests a glimpse into Jesus’ prophesy concerning the division of the nations into sheep nations and goat nations, those that support Israel versus those against Israel. We are currently in the time when this alignment is taking place. In working in strengthening brethren in lands of persecution we have seen evidence of this. It points to there being remnants of God’s people in the goat nations, while those emerging with alliances with Israel — as sheep nations — will be identified not by their Western orientation, but instead the prayerful dedication of those who believe and the influence of their leaders serving in their nation’s infrastructures, with parallels not unlike Joseph and Daniel of old.

Taking a closer look at the season we have entered, it is instructive to take a look at Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s vision. The part of the final kings was described by the vision of the statue in which the king saw feet and toes: divided, partly strong and partly fragile. Daniel described it as a time when there would be a mingling of coalitions, alliances between kingdoms, but ones that would not truly adhere to one another.

Parenthetically, as already noted, modern-day Josephs and Daniels will be hidden in seats of power of the infrastructures of dominant cultures very contrary to their own. Another insight is gleaned from a not too recent global study (Gabel and Bruner, Global Inc., 2003, Toynbee Foundation) concluding that 53 of the world’s 100 largest economies were corporations — pointing to this mantle being served in corporate hierarchies as well as nation-states. So, in drawing right conclusions to the parallels in understanding the times and the dynamic of the wealth transfer, it should be realized that the wealth transfer is about a shift in global power. It may involve money and certainly resources, but they are secondary and a result of the shift and unique exercise of Joseph’s and Daniel’s mantle. Resources came to Joseph and Daniel as a natural course of their functions. While there may be a mission for billionaires with a mission, this is not that.

Back to the “coalitions that do not adhere to one another.” China’s “One Belt, One Road” program, for example, reflects coalitions between poor nations who have become indebted to China for helping build their infrastructures. Muslim and Russian military alliances are another example of coalitions that are partly strong and partly fragile, that in reality don’t really adhere to one another.

There’s more. But to the point, God is emplacing modern-day Josephs and Daniels as people of significant influence in otherwise pagan seats of power – in both corporate and nation-state settings. Ones whose prophetic impartations do not conform with the glitter and the Western-spins found in so many pop-culture pronouncements. Instead, like the words given by Joseph and Daniel, they will be the unsanitized words of wisdom from on high that align their host-culture’s direction to God’s priorities with steps tied to the preservation of God’s people and of restoring them to the Land — the setting for restoring the Kingdom.

These dynamics, together with the “mingling of coalitions not adhering to one another,” sets the stage to better understand the key segments of the church described by John’s Revelation. While there are significant events concerning Israel yet to take place (i.e. Ezek 37) before we enter the time of countdown outlined in Revelation, we must realize these are times when it is prudent to get out of the box with our thinking as God prepares and aligns key players, game-changers patterned after Joseph and Daniel, but also key segments of the church for this major shift in power. While the West will be a part, the context is a global phenomenon.

Take for example the church at Smyrna. Highly persecuted. Likewise, the church at Pergamos described as being located where Satan’s throne is. Each being recognized segments of the church. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that in the safe places that the Lord prepares for His people that there will be ones of influence and anointing, modern-day Josephs and Daniels who will be serving in settings such as these, if not in positions of governmental power, then in positions of corporate, economic power. Their intent: preserving and mobilizing God’s people to bring the promised restoration.

There is something significant implied from Ezekiel’s prophesies (Chapters 36 and 37) about the completeness that will be actuated with the return of the full house of Israel to the Land.

These also will be times marked by the restoration of the supernatural. Paul notes that the world did not know God through wisdom, but that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. It is the level of wisdom that coincides with the power. These times will see the supernatural strongly evidenced in miracles, as well as in the authority of the prophetic. These will be the times that begin the rumblings of what is described in Revelation 12 when the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ have come.

The Standard for Leadership
Joseph and Daniel set the standard for spiritual leadership, whether in friendly or hostile host cultures and spiritual climates. Once they each prophesied to those in authority over them, both Joseph and Daniel experienced unusual favor. The response in-part was in the recognition of the spiritual authority they each operated in. Authority recognizes authority. But it also involved the recognition of royalty that came from the regal anointing that flowed from Joseph and Daniel. What was being recognized represents the foundation of Kingdom leadership.

In my book, “Leadership by Anointing,” I note that what God was putting together with the standard He set for defining His people has always been in establishing a society of leaders. It represents a leadership very different from the way the world tends to view leadership. Kingdom leadership is leadership of service.

So Kingdom leadership is not about being in charge. It operates on a much higher standard. Its basis finds residence in the heart of those who understand what it means to truly be under God’s authority. It pivots on serving. It is an anointing. As it matures, its regal nature blossoms and will be recognized even by the world. Abraham was referred to by a Hittite leader as being “a mighty prince among us.”

This anointing begins with the poise of the soul to serve in undefiled oneness with God’s Spirit. As such, this is not a calling in which ones are doing something for God through their own capabilities and exploits. Rather it is something they have allowed God to do – with His exploits being released through them. A subtle, yet very real difference. It is an anointing that to a fault avoids man-pleasing, self promotion.

It involves a high-level walk with the Lord. It is why I have previously made a point that this path involves the steps normally taken by mature, seasoned intercessors. Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were not Daniel’s intercessors. Each shared in this ability to seek and receive from God, but was multiplied when they did so together. Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were Daniel’s compatriots and prayer partners whose paths drew strength from one another, who also held positions in the king’s court and realm.

As scripture admonishes “Pursue love, but earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you might prophesy.” Such callings involve a refinement of the prophetic gift. It requires seasoning that comes from a life of service, sacrifice, adhering to God’s standard together with an unrelenting, honorable heart.

The Kingdom leadership anointing operates devoid of ego or being touchy. It goes with ones who have paid the cost needed to rule their own spirits (Prov 16:32). It incorporates a level of knowing God that results in it no longer being their own lives being lived, but them flowing as Daniel did in a strength with results described as being exploits. Leadership with a regal anointing foundation is always “other” directed. There are no personal agendas, nor a need to be in charge. It is a territory in which those around you will seek to draw from the anointing residing within you.

The Kingdom leadership anointing defines the standard. Regardless of the context, it maps out, it builds up and it brings increase. It enables others and nurtures community. This regal leadership anointing is always God-centered, raising the bar and establishing righteous influence in the culture around it. It is the anointing by which cultures are changed.

It was this anointing that established Daniel’s prominence and favor in the king’s court despite the prevailing culture of sorcery. Likewise, despite his lowly positions before being promoted by Pharaoh, it was this regal leadership anointing that consistently gained the recognition and trust of those in authority over Joseph.

The regal leadership anointing exudes an authority, a humble authority that very naturally bestows God’s blessings and wisdom. It is this regal leadership anointing that conveys a confidence that evokes trust for stewarding responsibility.

Distinctions Defining Their Uniqueness
The differences begin by the recognition that functionally Joseph and Daniel each served both significant apostolic and prophetic functions. However, Joseph clearly operated in what might be described in New Covenant terms as the office of apostle, while Daniel served strongly in the office of prophet.

Joseph’s time preceded the giving of the Torah, while Daniel’s followed it. In each case the cultures that became their hosts were strong and advanced for their days. They likewise operated in a reality that engaged strongly in the supernatural. While Joseph’s focus was economic, anticipating the impact of a coming famine, Daniel’s was more that as an advisor to the king while God’s people were captives during a time of judgment. The Joseph calling was directed toward averting the destruction created by judgment, ignited years prior by his brothers’ deceit with their neighbors — with the purpose of preserving God’s people. The Daniel calling was directed toward the goal of first preserving God’s people, but then restoring God’s people to the Land following their time of captivity.

Joseph’s planning and organizational decisions were laced with prophetic wisdom, whereas Daniel’s, who operated in a far more extreme and toxic spiritual atmosphere, were marked by this same prophetic wisdom, but also the supernatural intervention of God’s hand when his influence was not adhered to. Both earned the respect , trust and affection of the rulers they served as they uniquely retained their identities and roles as God’s ambassadors.

Setting the Stage
Jesus spoke of events He described as the beginning of sorrows leading into a time of tribulation. Daniel described a time of troubles like never before. He described them with the words: “In the time of the end many shall be purified and refined, but the wicked will do wickedly and none of the wicked will understand. But the wise shall understand.” This is a mantle reserved for the wise.

We are in a day facing increases in global concerns over economic, transportation, energy and communication disruptions; terrorism and border conflicts; as well as power struggles and major instabilities in relationships between ethnic groups and nations around the world. Yet, at the same time, the Spirit of the Lord is on the move. Globally, prayer is being mobilized like never before. Simultaneously, Internet technology, satellite communications and smart phone apps are enabling believers around the globe to be better connected, better informed and able to work together as a Body with much greater effectiveness.

The paradigm has shifted. The days upon us are perilous. Days requiring new mind-sets, approaches and strategies challenging the traditions of men. A time for the Body to pursue and embrace unity and come into the full knowledge of the Lord. There is a mobilization underway with anticipatory responses to the change. A mobilization and alignment of resources and God’s people . People of influence called as modern-day Josephs and Daniels penetrating the infrastructures of the world’s systems to impact the course of world events.

As it has been written: “Lord, my eyes have seen Your salvation that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel.”
